"She always liked to tell me I was no longer a slave. But I do not understand in what ways I am better off now, or even what ways my life would be different if I was still enslaved."

"I take that as a compliment," Nox answered with a chuckle. Not like I buy a single poisoned word about her from the bitch's mouth.

After getting that response, Andreas can't not anymore. "What if-- what if you-- if you had promised mom to not say something to anyone else, even Grandpa..."

Carver waves a hand. "It's fine. It wasn't your fault. And it's not your fault you didn't know. I'll be having a talk with your mother about keeping secrets -- they're toxic for families."

"You sound like Mistress Coquette," he says quietly. 

The words were right there, trembling on his tongue, straining against his lips. But there was no air in his lungs. I promised Charon... but should that matter? At this point? After what he did-- what he probably did? I need to talk to him but how can I-- There's no way I slip away. I don't... "I'm sorry," he croaks, the only thing he can offer.

A bittersweet smile danced over Nox's lips. "Sometimes, family isn't who you had or were supposed to have, but who you're lucky enough to find."

"I do not believe I am allowed to have a.... family. I am a slave. My progeny belong to my mistress. My siblings belong to someone else."
