Nox sagged a little, looking ashamed. "Then I apologize for not having made that clearer in the past."

Nathaniel looks startled. "I... had not considered that."

"Nathaniel," Nox said with affectionate exasperation, "I'm not trying to study or interrogate you. I just want to help how I can. You're... you're family, Nat." 

"How shall I measure my pain for you?" he asks quietly. 

At that reminder, Nox glanced over at the bed to check on the healer. The emotionless man was just finishing rewrapping Krem's ribs, and the noticeable reduction in swelling and bruising on his arms shows that magical healing was administered already. "No longer, I wager. And he's had plenty of painkillers. So again, how bad are you hurt?"

"Quite a bit. Less than Master Krem, I believe." 

Nox swallowed a few times. "I... I suppose that if-- if your starting was from Hells, anything is better..." He took a deep breath. "How much pain are you in?"

"I am alive. The beatings have been vastly reduced. I am no longer being used as a stud to breed more of my kind into slavery. I am merely a coddled house pet, now. There is much to be grateful for."

"No, that's-- My point is that you aren't getting what you deserve. That it isn't enough."

"I have never seen the point in postulating what I deserve. What I have received is enough."
