Shiori

"Tea would be lovely," sighs Shiori. "Well, at least we have each other, right?"

Jassinth

"And your sister and mother," Jass replies, giving them once last hug before rising to get tea for them both. "Hopefully sisters, sooner than later."

Shiori

Jassinth

"Is there any other family you were close to? Or hope to become so now?"

Shiori

"No." A dark look flashes across her face, but she paints a placid smile over top of it.

Jassinth

"Is there any other family Death-Strikes-From-Above can become close to then?" Jass asks in a oh-so very innocent voice.

Shiori

"No; my stepfather died while I was away."

Jassinth

Considering that as he boils water, Jass eventually shrugs. "Every fire new growth, every harvest sweat."

Shiori

Jassinth

"Hmm? Oh, sorry. Ah, there's good in every bad, and bad in every good basically. Forest fires are dangerous and devour much but leave behind rich ash for new growth and harvests, no matter their bounty, require effort and time to reap."

Shiori

"Ah." A pause. "Is there a type of fire that also salts the earth so you can grow nothing there? Because that's what I think of Eels like my stepfather."

Jassinth

"...I was saying him being already gone was a harvest; good he's gone but a shame I couldn't be a part of it."

Shiori

"Sure, of course." Shiori sighs, looking pensieve.

Jassinth

There's the sound of pouring water, once, then a second time, before strong arms wrap around Shiori from behind. "There is no shame in such feelings," he murmurs softly. "You are a wonderful woman, Shiori; a devoted daughter, a loyal sister, and, in time, I am sure you will be an excellent mother."

Shiori

"I hope you're right," Shiori sighs. "My example was... not great."
