Varisia narrows her eyes. "Tell me, was that meant to be a challenge? A dare?"

"You already intend to rape me, what do I possibly stand to gain from that?"

"I am not going to rape you," Varisai snaps. "Not that I could, under Alessa law, but I have no--" She breaks off, changes course, "I do not want to start our marriage by-- by holding you down and taking your body."

[Coquette Blacquin]

"Then you won't have any part of my body, because I do not want this."

[Varisia Primfana]

"I am betting that I can change your mind," Varisia explains simply.

[Coquette Blacquin]

"You won't."

[Varisia Primfana]

"Not tonight," is the calm agreement. "But in time, I hope to prove that there can be more between us than the wrongs your father committed. against us both. More you, I won't try and say otherwise but I am not the villain in your story."

"Us both," she says bitterly. "Seems like you came out on top."

[Varisia Primfana]

"More you," she repeats, reminding herself to be patient.

"What possible wrong did he do you, forget to throw in a pony?" she snaps. "You got  what you wanted out of this devil's deal."

The skin around her new wife's eyes tightens. "I did what I could for you, simply because I saw--" She cuts herself off. Patience. Patience. She has perfectly good reason to distrust you. "Your father is not a powerful man in his own right, no peerless bladesman or unfathomable wizard. But money, authority and prestige are power as well, and his eclipse mine by a great deal. Less and less as the years roll by," she adds almost defensively. "But I owe debts from the start of my climb from nothing and this was part of paying the debts owed to him. I didn't seek our marriage out, even if I am making not just the best of it but insisting the best be grand."

"I don't believe you." She sounds tired now, less defiant. "Do what you plan. I'm done with this."
