NPCs

There was a short pause. Then the nurse or healer or whatever she was replied firmly, "you must still be addled. You meant Master Genji's baby."
We are many. We are legion. We are... NPCs!

Shiori

Shoiri recognizes the danger when she hears it. "Both," she insists. "Master Genji is the father, but the babe is promised to worship Raplin."

NPCs

Another pause. "Well. That's no business of mine," she finally said, clearly deciding she doesn't want to be involved in whatever that's all about. "Now, how about sitting up and I'll help you eat some nice eel broth?"

Jassinth could be convinced to part from Shiori's side only for one, very important errand: paying call to Lady Emiko, desperately pleading for her help. When he arrives, he's shown to a side parlor, likely not the fancy one for guests. Neither do Lady Emiko and Manu arrive; instead, a young woman (older than Emiko) with a pinched nose and a suspicious expression enters. She doesn't order tea, nor does she sit. Instead, she puts her hands on her hips and demands, "Why are you attempting to visit my baby sister?"

This, then, would be Mistress Caelwyn. Technically they're not related; she was a foundling, just the right age to be a slightly older companion to watch over Emiko in her childhood. She occupies a strange space, not a servant but not a member of the household either; in her role as Emiko's playmate, she had to be able to go where Emiko could, but now that they are grown, there's no urgency to find her a marriage even as she's being discouraged from attending to Emiko in public anymore. After all, it wouldn't do for Emiko's father's heir to need a buddy to protect her, not once she'd summoned Manu for the first time and had a built-in chaperone. Caelwyn isn't seen much anymore, but it seems they have decided she's the best analogue for Jassinth.

Jassinth

"I, myself, need nor would ever dare to ask anything from your honored sister," Jassinth replied with all the humble charm he can muster. Sliding from his seat, he knelt on the carpet and bowed his head in a gesture of subservience only a step or two from a full kowtow. "But I would dare anything in service of my Lady. It is for her sake that I have come to beg for aid."

GamesMaster

"And your Lady is?" she asks, impatiently, tapping her foot.

Jassinth

"Ah! My deepest apologies. I have the honor of serving Lady Tora Shiori. They met at one of Lady Emiko's tea parties?"

GamesMaster

Her eyes narrow. "Oh, that one. With the fox. What does she want?"

Jassinth

"I... am sorry, have I given offense?" I will feed your body to boars if you prevent me from getting help.

GamesMaster

She waves a hand. "People are always trying to use my sister to get favors. But Emi-chan has spoken well of your mistress. I'll leave it up to her, but I'll at least hear you out."

Jassinth

"You... may or may not be aware, but my lady is only wed to the Tora Clan. And recently so," he added, rising to sit back down on the sofa. "The ways of the Tigers are... not her ways, and some of them are, ah, taxing. Most recently, she was tort-- subjected to a rite to..." He paused significantly, allowing Mistress Caelwyn to fill in the obvious blank, "that I am desperately seeking aid in recovering from."

GamesMaster

"My Emi doesn't have any healing skills," she warns. "She rather dislikes the sight of blood."

Jassinth

"I have coin to pay for healing but lack connections to secure a healer both skilled and trustworthy," Jass explained without missing a beat. "And... I hoped that being called upon by a friend, not matter how briefly, might help with wounds less physical." Of course, if my second-hand reading of Lady Emiko is at all accurate, once she sees Shiori, she'll be bound and determined to help with more than just a name and a visit.

GamesMaster

"Hmph." She leans forward, studying him carefully. A moment passes, before she leaps up to her feet. "Alright. Fine. I'll fetch her and you can have her for a few hours. But that's all, and Manu's coming too, understand?"

Jassinth

"I would never have expected otherwise," Jassinth assured her with sincere and obvious relief.
