Dixon

"So? I'm lighter than my dad but I'm still black. You're mixed but you still have fae ancestry."

Jamie D'vart

"I don't... being part-fae is the worst aspect of my life," he admits. "I need to cling to the fact that I'm not fully fae. That I'm... that I'm still human. Humans have choices, have more freedom than fae."

Dixon

"You know I used to think that about being black. Tried everything to change it. Talked white, dressed white, straightened my hair, even tried to lighten my skin, but none of it mattered. Cause at the end of the day it's on my blood. It's in my geans. I am black no matter how I look or talk or act. You will always have fae blood but that doesn't make you less. It's up to you what you do in life though"

Jamie D'vart

"This is... a little different," says Jamie.

Dixon

"Is it?" I ask gently "you can't change what you are you can't control dna you can control your actions. If you don't want to be like you're dad then don't. If you don't want to be like Toby then don't. Take care of the person you want to become."

Jamie D'vart

"Dad doesn't have a choice about what he does. I do. That's why I'm not fae."

Dixon

"My great grandparents were slaves they didn't have a choice in that now I am free. I get to make choices they never got the chance to make. It still doesn't change racism or my skin color. The way I see it you're the first generation out of fae control it doesn't change what you are but it does mean you now have choices. You can't change what you are but you can control who you are."

Jamie D'vart

Jamie shakes his head. "There's no difference between you and a white person except your color and the stuff society forces on you. But my dad is literally a different species. He's physically incapable of not being like he is. That's a huge difference. It's not just some cosmetic change, it's a fundamental aspect of who you are."

Dixon

I smile sadly at him "my bata, rocket, she has a prosthetic leg. She can't change that. Can't grow a new leg is she less human? Less wolf? There are lots of things we can't change about ourselves none of that makes us less. The way you talk about the fae makes it sound like you wish they never existed like you wish you were never born. And you're right humans, fae, wolfs, tigers, we're all different. But that doesn't make any of us less worthy to be alive. Being human doesn't make you better than being fae or being a wolf. It just makes you different." I look out over the lake for a moment "it's pretty here. Quiet. I like that. Never was one for city life..... but I was stationed in Kahbol for three years. For three years that city in the desert was my home. It was different. I didn't like it at first, but I came to accept it as the place I lived for now.  I even came to love it and the people who lived there.... Were not human Jamie and like it or not neither are you...but if you give us a chance you might actually come to find a family here...just some food for thought." I say gently

Jamie D'vart

Jamie looks away, cowed by the speech. I wasn't trying to say... I just thought... it's just different, being fae. That's all.

Dixon

Giggling breaks the silence that's formed around us. I look up to see Tova and her friends coming down the path baskets in hand. And smile

Tova koshack

I bounce down the path as I see Jamie and Dixon I love him but they look like he's had one of his deep talks and someone has to rescue Jamie from it. "Jamie! Jamie! Come berry picking with us! Mala wants to bake a pie so we have to go pick berries, come on it'll be fun!"

Jamie D'vart

"Uh, sorry, Dixon, Mala wants a pie,"s tammers out the lad before almost tripping over his feet in his haste to join Tova.

Tova koshack

I smile letting Jamie settle into the group before turning to him "you doing ok? Dixon can be kinda intense..... I'm sure what ever he said was meant well but he has a tendency to talk to everyone like their on of his psych patients. It can be a lot. We don't have to talk about it though if you don't want. We can just be teens picking Barrie's." I smile wide hoping he'll actually be my friend and stop standing on the outskirts of everything

Jamie D'vart

"...I've never picked berries before."
