Stone's Throw

[Charon Tethras]

"Caravans leave at first light. Let's see if any of them are hiring."

[Diligence]

"But plan?" Dil repeats more urgently.

[Charon Tethras]

"We go down to the edge of town, we hire onto whatever caravan is hiring, and we go wherever they're going. When we get there, we take the money we've earned, we get a flat, and we start looking for permanent work."

[Diligence]

"That is... technically a plan," Dil allows after a moment. "How do we get hired? I'm a blind lizard-rat and you're kind of scruffy. Sorry."

[Charon Tethras]

"Oh, they'll take anyone. That's what a lot of us who age out do." His bravado here is born solely from ignorance,  not realizing that an opportunity that just calls for warm bodies might not take the best care of their employees. 

[Diligence]

"Really? Huh." Dil takes a slow breath. "I mean... I guess. I-- yeah. Okay. Better than-- better. So. What do we need to gather?" Dil's eyes widen. "I need my books!"

[Charon Tethras]

"Yeah, and like... Some clothes. Maybe nick some food."

[Diligence]

"Steal?" Dil gasps, looking shocked. 

[Charon Tethras]

"Well not really. It's your home so it's your food too."

[Diligence]

"No, I've been told it's all theirs before," Dil explains with a shake of his head. "Well. Valshathe's technically, but She gifts it to them for their piety and then they gift it to us for our hard work."

[Charon Tethras]

"Well, we're about to work hard, so we deserve it." A pause. "Or you could grab some coin, call it your inheritance."

[Diligence]

Dil squints at Charon. "Are you doing that thing where you're clever, I'm convinced, then we get in trouble? It sounds like you're doing that thing where you're clever, I'm convinced and we get into trouble."

[Charon Tethras]

"We're already in trouble," he grumbles. "You're going away. Forever. We can't let that happen."

[Diligence]

"That...." Dil's head bobs backwards as he bounces on his feet. "That makes sense? Huh. Civil level punishments are effectively suspended, as the greatest level-- exile-- has already been sentenced. Huh."

[Charon Tethras]

"Yes, exactly. So are you game?"
