Stone's Throw

[Charon Tethras]

Charon pads over, gently pressing a paw to Dil's cheek. "Dil?"

[Diligence]

"I am the death of death," Dil mumbles, still dreaming. At least, Charon hopes his friend has better taste than that tired old line.

[Charon Tethras]

Charon shakes his friend's shoulder harder. "Dil, wake up."

[Diligence]

"Screeee!" Dil hisses raspily as he bolts upright. His eyes, uncovered and very wide, lock onto Charon after darting around for a few seconds and he goes silent. "Oh hey, you're finally back. Hungry?"

[Charon Tethras]

"Yeah," he admits. "But I got the job!"

[Diligence]

"Really! That's awesome!" Dil wiggles on the bench for a moment, then cocks his head to the side. "I lost track," he confesses. "Which job was this? Oh, but you should eat. I saved you some chicken and rice. And a biscuit. There was always just one biscuit, certainly not two," he adds with a guileless smile.

[Charon Tethras]

Charon chuckles. It's good he's eating. He's so much littler, if he misses meals he's got less to spare. "the brothel job. As a cleaner."

[Diligence]

"A cleaner? That's good work," Dil replies, pushing the plate a little towards his best friend in a pointed hint. "It is... safe though, right?"

[Charon Tethras]

Charon digs into the chicken, putting the biscuit in front of Dil. Too many carbs can make him ill, after all, and Dil seems to really like them. "Yes," he says. "I don't... think I'll have to do anything immoral. Just... exhausting."

[Diligence]

"Oh that's great," Dil says with relief, leaving the biscuit there for now. I'll let him have a chance to take it if he's hungry, he decides. "Though... how big is the place? I mean, sleeping is hardy a messy activity, right?"

[Charon Tethras]

Charon gives Dil an odd look, then shudders. "Not the way they do it there. It's... very messy."

[Diligence]

Dil blinks one eye, then the other. Did I say something weird? "Huh. Weird. Maybe it's a city-folk thing?"

[Charon Tethras]

"It's a skins-vs-furs-and-scales thing I think."

[Diligence]

"Oh. Huh." Dil peers at his hand for a moment, the look of scholarly contemplation ruined by his other hand absently picking up the biscuit to nibble on. "Smooth-softs are weird," he finally decides, not even realizing that he's casually using a mild slur.

[Charon Tethras]

"Agreed," he sighs, finishing his chicken and starting on some of the rice. "How was your day?"
