Stone's Throw

[Diligence]

Dil perks up, looking excited. And a little guilty. "I-- I tried to get work at a library but, umm, that-- Well, I found a book on kobolds!" And someone else got hired while I was reading it. 

[Charon Tethras]

"Oh, excellent! Find out anything cool?"

[Diligence]

Dil's eyes widen even more, the pupils quivering in a display of excitement and wonder that Charon has only seen a handful of times before. "Kobolds are descended from dragons," he says in a breathless voice.

[Charon Tethras]

"Oh wow, that's sick!" he says, sounding totally enthused. "Dragons are.... wow."

[Diligence]

"Wow? Wow? Charon, dragons!" 

Laying on the floor near the table, Dog lets out a loud grunt at the excessive noise.

"Dragons!"

[Charon Tethras]

"I know!" He grins, tiredly, raking a hand through his hair. "That's amazing. Congratulations."

[Diligence]

"I still haven't finished it, but there was a small bit about how some kobolds have tapped into the arcane majesty in their blood so deeply they grow wings," Dil continues, rambling in his excitement. "And they can exhale elemental forces."

[Charon Tethras]

"Do you think you can manage it? That would be amazing, Dil!"

[Diligence]

Dil sags, tail drooping. "I have no idea," he admits glumly. "They didn't explain how or even why some and not others or anything. I need to learn more but I couldn't find any other books about me-- about kobolds, I mean."

[Charon Tethras]

"There's mage schools. Even adventurer schools. I'll pick up as many shifts as I can, maybe we can send you to one."

[Diligence]

"What? No, Charon, you need to do good for you too," Dil protests.

[Charon Tethras]

"I need one of us to be happy. Once you're an adventurer you'll be rich, then you can pay for me. Deal?"

[Diligence]

"That..." Dil frowns, squinting at his best friend. "Hrrm." He scowls, arms crossing. "...logic," he mutters darkly.

[Charon Tethras]

Charon polishes off his rice, then stands, stretching. "Come on. Let's get to bed. I've got another shift tomorrow night."

[Diligence]

"Fine," Dil agrees, reaching over to grab the now empty plate. "But slower is better than you burning yourself out, got it?"
