Go Down

Vic rolls his eyes again. "You people are weird," he informs her, matter-of-factly, before heading back into the office.

Kate doesn't make a comment, and less than five minutes later four sergeants are standing in Kirk's office looking at Tony standing behind the desk with very puzzled looks on their faces.

"I won't beat about the bush, Kirk quit today and gave me command of this precinct. I am currently Acting Captain here, Until such time as Internal Affairs appoints someone to the position permanently. I don't like the situation any more than you do and hope to hell IA gets off their asses and finds someone soon because i sure as hell don't want his job."

Tony pauses for reaction or comment but none is forth coming.

"But since i have this job for the moment i'm going to do a damn good job at it. Going to mix up the patrols, we know we've got drugs getting run through here and we're not catching them. So we're going to mix up our patrols and hopefully catch the smugglers in the act. If they've learned our routes then they're going to be getting complacent."

Tony then leads the sergeants through the deployment he wants everyone to have before sending them about their business. As they leave the one called Bear asks

"Cap, you want us to tell the men about Kirk?"

"It's no secret." Tony confirms "But try to keep it quiet for now. I'll be making a formal announcement in the morning when the shifts change. With luck IA will appoint someone who actually wants the job by end of week and i can go back to being a Louie."

Vic watches the proceedings with his hawk-eyes, taking in the stances, the body language, the reactions. As the door bangs shut, he stares through the window at the men departing, waiting a few seconds just in case any of them have particularly keen ears.

"Bear will betray you," he throws out, casually. The body language, the slight scowl -- Bear wasn't happy about Tony getting this job, likely a sign he was going to backstab him to take it if they were mobsters.

accalia

"Maybe. I hope IA promotes him to Captain, he's been bucking for the position for a year now, since it became clear that Kirk wasn't going to last long. It's a jump to throw him from Sarge to Captain, but i think he can do the job, and he's got that chip on his shoulder to make him want to prove he can handle it. I'll be recommending him to IA when they call me about this."

Tony doesn't seem too worried about Bear, it's not like Bear would murder to get the position, this is the police, not some gang of thugs.

yamikuronue

Vic frowns. Was he not taking this seriously? "Watch your back, is all. I don't want to get shot for your cop bull."

accalia

"Shot? why would Bear do that? All that would do is get him thrown in the slammer and make it so he can't get the job he wants."

Yep, that confused Tony.

yamikuronue

Vic stares at him openly. "To create an opening," he says, slowly, as if talking to an idiot.

Vic stares at him openly. "To create an opening," he says, slowly, as if talking to an idiot.

"It. Would. Be. Murder. Murderers don't get to be Captain. Hell, they don't get to be cops at all. Besides, i already told him i don't want the job. Maybe i'll worry if i get stuck with it anyway, but until then he's still chasing that carrot and it's not out of reach yet."

yamikuronue

"That only counts if he gets caught," Vic points out. "Unless he's a total idiot, he won't get caught." Ouch, such faith in the local police!

accalia

"well if he's that passionate about it.... more power to him i guess. I don't care who they put in as captain, so long as it ain't me."

Tony's not concerned about that apparently. Or is it he's not concerned about the possibility of dying?

"important part for right now is, we've got our opening for tomorrow night. Just gotta run out this shift, get the keys to the boat from my brother tomorrow morning, and pray..."

yamikuronue

"And I don't care who shoots you, so long as they don't shoot me. So we're clear."

Vic shifts his weight a bit, cricking his neck. "Great. So now what?"

accalia

"A long boring night of paperwork." Tony replies "got all my usual to.... hold on."

Tony goes to the door and sticks his head out. "Kate, has Bear left for his beat let?"

"No sir."

"Good, Tell him i'm issuing him a set of pips, he's to take over my old role until we figure out who's in charge here. Tell him to pass on his stripes to someone under him he trusts for now. I can't make the positions permanent, they'll both be acting just like I am, but i'll make damn sure they're paid as if they're permanent, at least until whomever the new captain is comes in. And while you're up, grab yourself a little something from petty cash, I'm going to have to rely on you more than i should until i get my feet under me or get busted back down to louie where i belong so you might as well get paid for it too."

Tony closes the door then "Well that will get rid of at least half my paperwork, and if Bear does a good job of the paperwork that will be a feather in his cap to IA, 'll help him get the job.

yamikuronue

Vic watches all this with a dispassionate eye. Clearly, the precinct was one of those places that ran based on money rather than fear -- actually, most places probably run based on money instead of fear, since most places (Vic knew, however abstractly) don't shoot you when you fuck up. Must be nice, working one of those places. Maybe that's how Tony got himself a house. Then again, he was clearly higher up the chain than Vic was thinking, given he's been put in charge without notice. Which is another sign of the Boss' favor, that Vic was given puppy-dog duty over him. Which is even more frightening. Vic didn't want power. Power got you real dead real fast, like dear old dad. Vic wanted just enough power to be able to pool his money with his brothers' and make a nice life for themselves, without attracting undue attention.

Why does everyone insist on putting me in charge? he bemoaned, silently. Even Vic wasn't sure if Giovanni had a secret apprentice... but more and more he was suspecting that, if it wasn't him, he was the decoy for the real apprentice.

He doesn't say any of this. Instead, he leans against a wall, trying to look casual. "Okay."

accalia

The night is long, and boring. Nothing much happened, Bear came in to get a set of keys from Tony, who handed them over without question, there was a few arrests that Tony had to do extra paperwork for some reason on, most of the others didn't need the paperwork, and before long it's starting to turn morning once more.

"Vic, can i send you across the street for a coffee and something to eat? got to stay here till the other louie shows up to relieve me and i'm dying for a nap. Can't do that till i hand of command and tell the day shift about the captain though. It'd be a hell of a favor."

And Tony does seem genuinely tired, and in desperate need of more than a nap.

yamikuronue

"Nope," says Vic, not seeming tired. Ah, the endless energy of youth...
