Across this great earth wanders a man. This man is blessed with the ability to heal the wounds of others. When he uses this power the injury and illness of his target is drawn from them and into his own body which suffers the exact same injury as the one that he healed. His body then heals at an accelerated pace, healing in a day what would take approximately a month to heal for normal people. For illness a similar effect happens, and this man has shown the ability to recover from otherwise fatal injuries such as stage 5 brain cancer, and several autoimmune diseases.

Of course healing in this manner is unpleasant to this man for he suffers the pain of the injuries he takes and heals, for no injury can be healed by magick without the pain of it being fully experienced. This is true of natural talents as well as from arcane spells, it is one of the core prices that must be paid, as it was in ancient days so it is now, even with magick being all but forgotten, replaced as it was with science.

Of course this man wanders not randomly but with purpose. He is cursed, once in the long ago he performed some great blasphemy, and was punished by the god-mages of the time for this transgression.

Quote"You shall wander this Earth, outcast and alone. Your magic is stripped from you, your abilities sealed, save that which allows you to heal others. This ability you will be compelled to exercise, You shall heal those you encounter indiscriminately, without ask of payment, and accepting no thanks. This you shall do, yet never shall you remember your past, nor shall those remember your passing. You will remember only this curse and the healing you perform. This you shall do until you find the soul of the one you wronged, and earn their forgiveness and love. That soul, and that soul alone shall remember you, and that soul alone can release you from your eternal wandering. Now go, begin your journey into Forever.

Looking for character to play that one destined soul. Character may be male or female.

Setting: Present * Day... Present * Time...

Magick is real, but relatively unknown as science has replaced it for most, and this has occurred long ago that most call Merlin a Myth instead of a man.

Magick, to those who practice operates on a four basic, and inviolable rules:
  • The mage must believe that their magic will work
  • The mage must convince the universe that their magic will work
  • The mage must provide the same amount of energy to accomplish an effect as it would to do it the mundane way
  • Pain inflicted must be fully experienced by the caster, and wounds healed must be fully experienced by the healer[/li
The first two rules mean that belief id absolutely required and that doing things that twist natural laws is much easier than doing something that breaks them. The last means that the law of conservation of energy is maintained, the mage must draw the power from themselves or their reageants (which makes a flask of high proof alcohol a popular daily carry for mages as it is energy dense and can be burned as part of a spell to provide the necessary power)

These rules cannot be violated by mages, attempting to do so will cause the spell to fail, and if the mage tries to invest enough power into the spell to force it to work will result in the death of the mage. These rules are set in stone, yet the tale of our mystery man as well as several older tales suggest that these rules were not always in place. It is unknown if the rules are the result of a great spell that binds magic to prevent misuse, or if magic itself changed at some point and might alter the rules it operates under at some point in the future.

The only exception to these rules of magic are inborn talents, such as the mystery man's ability to heal. Such inborn talents are completely outside the control of their owner, they will perform their manifestation according to their own rules, and generally take the form of "if TRIGGER then MAGIC HAPPENS", this is all that gives a Talented control, if they know their trigger they can attempt to control their exposure to the trigger.

Opening scene to be negotiated based on the character that is created to play along side this mystery man.....

Well.... no, but this is a world where magick is no longer popularly known so it should probably be something that can generally pass for human (the last time i played this character they were played opposite werewolves)

I think a nine tailed kitsune would be rather hard pressed to move around the world given that modern people *know* that kitsune are not actually real so would either think they are a cosplayer (and a weird one at that for wearing it when there's no con around) or would majorly freak out because that's not how the world works.....

:-)

My thoughts were going somewhere along the lines of Gasposde the talking dog, who most people don't "hear" because they know dogs can't talk, but if he talks to them out of the shadows they can converse fine

I see no reason why that wouldn't work as a side character (this may be a 1x1 i'm looking for so just two muns, but that doesn't mean just two characters) but i think it would be more than a little limiting for a main character, no?

did you have something in mind for a main character too? or an argument as to why i'm wrong about side cahracter status?

Jaloopa

I was just spitballing something that would make it difficult or awkward to fulfil the earning of forgiveness and love. A cat would be better for that than a dog.

Since it's soul rather than person, is there some sort of reincarnation or does it necessarily involve someone really old?

I have a few half formed ideas floating round. Might take a while to put together a proper character from any of them though

accalia

Reincarnation is a thing in this world, yes.

has the other half of the soul reincarnated? not necessarily, no, but i'd say most of the good stories will have the answer yes. Echo (mystery man) is the only one who doesn't age, and that only because of his curse. whomever did this to him invested a *LOT* of power in the curse, probably paying part of the price with their own life (a noble sacrifice being a powerful source of energy.... magic likes good drama)

No spell is perfect and the flow of time cannot be stopped (and in the current rules it's pretty hard to make it slow down appreciably without some really nasty side effects) so in terms of crunch Echo has been wandering the planet for at least 20k years, and in that time he's aged physically..... about six months give or take. mentally i haven't decided the extent of his own resets, will depend on who or what his foil is in this game.
