The Amell Legacy: Transgressions

Marian Hawke

She takes a deep breath, sighing a little. "Alright... Uh... I don't know any lullabyes but..." She hums a little, then begins to sing, gently: "Janet tied her jerkin green a bit above her knee, and she's gone to Caterhaugh as fast as go can she, she'd not pulled a double rose, a rose but only two, when the young Tam Lin appeared, said lady pull no more. And how come you to Caterhaugh without command from me? I come and go, young Janet said, I'll ask no leave of thee.."

Varric

A faerie love ballad? Interesting (damn, her voice is better than I expected) choice. Soothing. Ricky certainly likes it, he notes as the baby stares up at Marian with wide eyes. After the third verse, however, the babe's eyes start to flutter closed.

Marian Hawke

Marian breaks off singing, to coo "bitty bitty baby, bitty bitty baby..." But she winces when he wakes back up, making fussy sounds. "She will turn me in your arms, into a lion bold, but hold me fast and fear not, as you will love your child," she resumes -- not where she left off, oddly enough.

Varric

Alright, maybe not a critic but evidently an aficionado.

Marian Hawke

Oddly enough, this part of the song seems to go on a while, as Tam Lin is turned into a hippogriff ("but hold me fast and fear not, I will take you to wife"), an owlbear ("but hold me fast and fear not, and your man you'll ensnare"), a dragon great ("but hold me fast and fear not, as your child's cries you'll sate"), a drow so black ("but hold me fast and fear not, or father your child will lack")...

Eventually, little Ricky succumbs to sleep, as Marian rocks him gently. She smiles, gently tapering off the song, and looks up at Varric. "Now what?" she whispers.

Varric

Varric rises to his feet, beckoning her to follow.  Minutes later, Ricky is tucked away in his cradle and the pair are back at the banked campfire. "You have a real gift there. Gifts rather."

Varric

"No, seriously. You're great with Ricky. And that was beautiful."

Marian Hawke

"Maybe with the baby, but I don't sing."

"Evidently you do," Haliel says quietly as she slips out from her tent. "That was indeed beautiful. With some training, you could easily make a thriving career with your voice."

Haliel Lightsong

Haliel nods as she moves over to the campfire. "I am. And keep in mind, I used to sing with the choir in Draslina. I was certainly not the best, as I never really sought training, but I was still accepted to sing. And you're at least as good as me."

"I would say it's more an Outsider thing," Haliel says after a moment's thought. "Mortal flesh has limits. Outsiders can sometimes slip around those." She smiles broadly. "Regardless, a voice as wonderful as yours is a gift, one that nearly any deity would welcome raised in their name."

Varric

"Or any tavern, theatre or traveling bard show," Varric puts in.
