Marian Hawke

"You-- no, that's not right," she protests. "My father died, so Mother came back, got married, and immediately got pregnant with you."
Honesty. Openness. Trust. Not being stabbed in the gut with a sword.

Bethany

"Yeah, right after. Like... within a week?" Beth snorts. "There are plenty that wonder, though most have let it go, given it was fifteen years ago. FA fresher gossip and scandal after all."

Marian Hawke

"I always figured she-- well, it's not uncommon to, ah... once the engagement's confirmed, it's up to the groom if he want to ask for a test. And given, you know, me, I figured he figured why wait? Ah, with all due respect of course."
Honesty. Openness. Trust. Not being stabbed in the gut with a sword.

Bethany

"Another contender," Beth allows. "But... no. We'e all full siblings, not half, I'm as sure of that as I can be without a blood telling. Surprise."

Marian Hawke

Marian tilts her head, then, gazing at Beth's ears -- though of course there's not a hint of taper to them. "Huh."
Honesty. Openness. Trust. Not being stabbed in the gut with a sword.

Bethany

"More common than you might think," Beth comments, noticing her sister's gaze. "Shan's new little brother is full human. Sorry, Shannon is a... good friend of mine, another Light's daughter."

Marian Hawke

"I remember. Zi'Marass, right?" she says, resuming her oatmeal. "The pretty one," she adds, without thinking about it until she's said it. She pauses, then, for another instant, before resuming her shoveling. Stupid. Don't let your guard down!
Honesty. Openness. Trust. Not being stabbed in the gut with a sword.

Bethany

"Gods yes," Bethany says with a grin. "She was my first kiss," she half brags. "Some other firsts too." Just like her sister, she stills after her words, tensing as she waits for a reaction.

Marian Hawke

Marian glances around, swallows, nods. "Alright," she allows. But maybe don't say that so loud. "You fancy any boys?" Or only girls?
Honesty. Openness. Trust. Not being stabbed in the gut with a sword.

Bethany

Beth hesitates. "I..." She bites her lip. "Just the one. But... it's... complicated. Really complicated. But just him so far. Otherwise it's just girls. Pretty ones, like Shan, Lightsong, Bel-" She cuts off, blushing crimson.

Marian Hawke

Marian's eyes widen a hair. She thinks I'm pretty?! She shakes her head, then, and leans forward a bit, indicating with the spoon. "That's good, then. That you'll be able to have a family, yeah?" she adds, emphasising the word as she draws a little circle horizontally between them with the spoon.
Honesty. Openness. Trust. Not being stabbed in the gut with a sword.

Bethany

What? Is she just... sure, that's just fine. Okay. "I guess. Honestly not sure I want kids ever. Waaaay to soon to be considering it. Sure as magic missile not having them for at least five years. Maybe ten."

Marian Hawke

"Oh definitely," she agrees. "I suppose I should be telling you not to date until you're.. what's it for humans, thirty? Thirty sounds right."
Honesty. Openness. Trust. Not being stabbed in the gut with a sword.

Bethany

Beth snorts, loudly and indelicately. Waaaay too late for that.

Marian Hawke

Marian sticks her tongue out. "Do you know, despite having the same lifespan, Dwarves say 'no grandchildren until she's a hundred' and gnomes say 'no dating until you're fifty'? It's a different milestone, but that doesn't quite make the difference in idiom. Different cultures, I guess. I suspect gnomes are more given to experimentation in dating as well as with machines, while dwarves are slower to move, like the stones they work."
Honesty. Openness. Trust. Not being stabbed in the gut with a sword.
