Bethany

"Huh. What about elves?" She sounds so... clever. No, more than clever. Smart. Like Sage smart.

Marian Hawke

"Elves, let me think... ah yes, that's right. Elves say, the mighty oak does not flower until its full height is reached. Which, strictly speaking, is not true in a botanical sense, but it makes for a good threat, given the mental image of the suitor in question being chopped in half with a hand axe."
Honesty. Openness. Trust. Not being stabbed in the gut with a sword.

Bethany

Beth snorts. Yeah, I'd love to see Mother go after Zev with an axe. Or Shan for that matter. "That's kind of neat. Is... is that what you do? Study... languages and stuff?" Her question is casually voiced, but she leans in slightly and her eyes dart to Marian's face as if she were so impatient to hear the words she'll try and see them spoken.

Marian Hawke

"My master does. Well, peoples really, not just languages. I ended up cataloguing a number of phrases across languages for her just last spring."
Honesty. Openness. Trust. Not being stabbed in the gut with a sword.

She shrugs. "Doesn't matter, really. Keep my head down, do the work, graduate. Only I'm hardly likely to graduate at this rate, am I? Doesn't matter. I probably won't stick with research anyway."
Honesty. Openness. Trust. Not being stabbed in the gut with a sword.

Bethany

Bethany frowns. "Why not? Is there something else you plan to do instead?"

Marian Hawke

She shrugs. "Depends how all this goes, don't it?" she says, too casually.
Honesty. Openness. Trust. Not being stabbed in the gut with a sword.

Bethany

Beth bites her lip, tapping her fingers nervously on the table. "What... what kind of ending are you hoping for?"

Marian Hawke

"One where everyone involved is alive and safe. Folks like me don't get to be choosy."
Honesty. Openness. Trust. Not being stabbed in the gut with a sword.

Bethany

"Maybe not everyone," Beth mutters, shuddering as phantom fingers brush her skin. Her eyes close partially as she tries to stay in the moment.

Marian Hawke

"All the people anyway," she says breezily.
Honesty. Openness. Trust. Not being stabbed in the gut with a sword.

Bethany

"And- and Hunter," Beth says in an unsteady voice.

Marian Hawke

"Marabi are intelligent, they can be people," allows Marian. "How about you? What's your life goal?"
Honesty. Openness. Trust. Not being stabbed in the gut with a sword.

Bethany

Beth stares at the bowl in front of her. "I... I just... I've been focused on taking care of C-Car for s-so long, I... she hates me. I don't even- I don't understand... She hates me."
