Varric

"Why the fu-" Varric slowly exhales, then takes in a new breath. "No. No sanitarium. Don't really hold with that sort of place."

Marian Hawke

"What, at all? Santariums provide a vital service--"

Marian cuts herself off, spying the look on Varric's face, and hunches her shoulders a bit. "Sorry."
Honesty. Openness. Trust. Not being stabbed in the gut with a sword.

Varric

"Vital service my firm arse," Varric says sourly. "Prisons with a pious name is all they are." He waves a hand. "Sure, sure, some of the healers are real, are truly trying to help. Some of the patients might even keep better. But no. The only people I could support being put into sanitariums are people that should be a prison anyway- violent types. Actual violent types. Not just self-defence or a few smacks or something. I mean coming at someone with a weapon looking for blood and pain."

"I guess? But people can't take care of... I mean, not like, just being weird or whatever, but if someone's like, really mentally ill. It can be expensive or take special training to take care of them."
Honesty. Openness. Trust. Not being stabbed in the gut with a sword.

Varric

"Which is what hospices are for," Varric counters. "If they just need help taking care of themselves, why not put them with people that have physical reasons why they need help? That's what sanatoriums are- horrid hybrids of prisons and hospices."

Bethany

"This is all really neat and all but..." Beth smiles sweetly. "Maybe you two can fight this out later? After your stupid boy's only card game maybe?"

Marian Hawke

Marian gives her a sharp look. "I'm not a boy, I won't be there."
Honesty. Openness. Trust. Not being stabbed in the gut with a sword.

Carver Amell

"I don't want to be sent to a hospice or a prison either!" snaps Carver.

Bethany

Beth stares at Marian. "...after the card game, not during," she says slowly. Is Marian not sure about her gender too?

Varric

"You can feed, wipe and clean yourself up and have not come after any of us for so much as a drop of blood so..." Varric shrugs casually. "Seriously, you're fine lad."

Carver Amell

"I..."

He falters again, the anger fading. "Really? It's just... Uncle said..."

Varric

"Never met the guy. All reports indicate he was a shit head."

Marian Hawke

Marian, on the other hand, has a much stronger reaction: "What. Did he. Do."

It's interesting -- for someone who thinks she can't cast much magic, there's an impressive current of cold air forming around her, a bit of ice solidifying in her long brown hair.
Honesty. Openness. Trust. Not being stabbed in the gut with a sword.

Carver Amell

Carver takes a step back, stammering, "I-- he-- he said-- he sh-showed me what would happen if I--"

Bethany

Hunter lets out a low growl, hackles rising as he glares at Marian for scaring his person.

"Hey, hey, hey," Beth says soothingly, moving to block her twin's view of Marian. "She's not mad at you, it's Lor- it's Gamlen she's mad at. Take a deep breath for me?"
