Carver Amell

Carver starts, scrambling back off her in a hurry. "B-beth?"

Bethany

She bolts upright as soon as she can, faces pressed to her knees as she takes rapid, ragged breaths. She's trembling violently, hands clasps in front of her legs as she rocks. "I'm okay, it's Car," she mumbles several times, noticeably calming as she does so.

Carver Amell

Carver crawls forward, moving to put a hand on her shoulder. "It's okay. You're okay. We're okay. It's me, Beth," he says, trying to follow her lead.

Bethany

After taking in a deep breath, she lifts her head to give him a shaky smile. "S-sorry. That-" She shudders. "Hug good, just- don't- don't pin me. Please. I can't- he held me down and-"

Carver Amell

Carver blanches, pulling back. I remind her of being raped.

Now that his human head is engaged again, shame floods through him. I touched my sister. I did the unthinkable. Didn't Mother always make it clear how sinful the wrong kinds of love are? Am I even Astean anymore? How could I betray Beth like that, to go after her, to pin her, to... I hurt her.

He slips off the bed, moving to grab for his trousers. "I-- I'm sorry," he mumbles, hands shaking. No wonder they wanted me to be a girl. I'm awful as a boy.

Bethany

Wait, why is he- "Please don't leave me," Beth blurts out, voice stricken. "Please." Don't leave me again. Everyone leaves.

Carver Amell

"I hurt you," he whispers, and there's venom and shame in it. "I'm-- I'll just-- I'll go get cleaned up, I'll s-see you at d-dinner," he mutters, yanking on his trousers roughly, not bothering with his underpants.

Bethany

"No, Carver, please- leaving would hurt me most of all," she says quickly, forcing herself to uncurl from around herself and grab at his arm. "I'm- I'm fine, just- just a little flashback, I- please don't leave me."

Carver Amell

Carver stills, his hands still shaking. I hurt her. I have to make it right.

He forces himself to walk the two steps to the bed, stomach heaving, and sit. "Alright," he says, and his voice is dull, flat. Familiar, for all that it's an octave or two deeper now.

Bethany

Beth's breath catches in her throat at that voice. "I- Carver-" She forces herself to breath, then quickly mutters something that strips the sweat and other fluids from her body. Reaching out, she repeats it for him. "Hand- hand me my dress and then- then can we talk? I- I didn't want to- I just wanted to help you and now I've-"

Carver Amell

Carver reaches down, picks up her dress, hands it to her. "Sure," he says, in that same tone.

Bethany

Beth slips it on, standing to let is fall and cover her body. "Carver, please talk to me? What happened? What's wrong?" Strangely, his pain and returned depression has pushed her right past her own flashback. She's still shaky, still pale, but focusing on him is making her ignore it.

Carver Amell

"I'm fine," he says, forcing himself to look in her direction, which gives the unsettling impression he's staring through her. "What do you need? How do I fix it?" There's a little more life in his voice as he asks, a sense of earnesty and desperation creeping in.

Bethany

"I- I need you to tell me why you- why you sound like this," Beth says shrilly. "I'm sorry I freaked out but- damnit Carver, I tried my best to make this work, why are you-"

Carver Amell

"I-- s-sound  like w-what?" he stammers, looking up and seeing her face, his eyes brimming with tears.
