Go Down

Varric

"Intelligence comes in a lot of forms," Varric snaps back, starting to lose his own temper. Damnit Marian! Get over this whole expectation thing! Everyone wants things, everyone has expectations of people. That's normal and even healthy. "You might be brilliant and clever with facts and numbers, but you are stupid about emotions and people. Appallingly so."

"Tanna sure didn't think so, and neither does Bela," she snarls. "I'm only sorry I came back at all!"

Then she turns, slamming the door open as she heads out of her room. Fuck this. I can nap in Bela's room.
Honesty. Openness. Trust. Not being stabbed in the gut with a sword.

Vigilant

There was a Paladin of the Vigilant Defender here at the Oak for an entire day before someone told Vig who, exactly, had been sent to fetch the twins back home. "It's like they don't even care," he groused, tail swaying back and forth as he cleaned a paw. "Honestly. Does anyone even recall whom I Serve?"

"Mm-hmm, no, you don't say," murmured Carbonne, stretched out in a sunbeam and clearly too comfortable to move.

"Well. That won't do at all. I'll just go introduce myself. Surely that would be the polite thing to do, would it not?"

"Mmm. Of course."

"Yes, I rather thought so. Oh, dear me, I hope I've cleaned my whiskers well enough. They did say Bright's Vallen, yes? Not Bright's Valworth?"

"Mmm."

"Yes, no, of course they did. I'm being silly. I'll just-- do tell them where I've gone, if they come looking?"

"Aye-aye."

"Thank you. I am in your debt."

And so, tail tip twitching with nerves, Vigilant sets out across the road to where Bright's Vallen is staying, trotting up to her door and batting at it with a paw. "Ahem? Bright's Vallen? I do apologize, I am incapable of making the proper rapping at your door."

There's a brief pause, then a call to wait a moment. Seconds later, the door opens to reveal a tall woman glad in gleaming fullplate. "Yes, hello-" The polite greeting cuts off with a low growl. "Damn kids- I would have thought a small village..."

Vigilant

Vigilant leaps up another foot, having hoped that he would be high enough off the ground to be noticable -- but, no, she's so tall and imposing and magnificent, truly one who will strike fear into the hearts of evildoers with merely a glance -- and clears his throat.

"Begging your pardon, Bright's Vallen, I hope I am not intruding."

She jerks back a step, eyes flaring with steel light as her gaze whips around to- "A silvanshee?" she blurts out, surprised. She slowly forces himself to relax.

Vigilant

"Ah! yes. Hello. Do beg my pardon -- I mean, I beg your pardon -- oh, I've gone about this all wrong. Allow me to begin again. I am Bright's His-paws-are-silent-but-his-growl-is-fierce-in-defense-of-the-righteous, sworn to the service of the Vigilant Protector. How do you do."

Vallen stares another few seconds, then snaps out of it. Slipping into Celestial, she nods crisply. "I am Bright's Aveline Vallen of Nyra, sworn to the temple of Devotion Even After Death, trained by Bright's Cassandra Pentaghast and Night Captain of Coalside. Please, enter and be welcome."

Vigilant

He shivers, just a little, eyes wide. Yes, you are! is all he can think for a moment, before he replies in kind. "Ah. Right. Of course. Thank you ever so, Bright's."

And when the silvanshee says it, there's no slight slur, no hint of a dropped s. Bright's. Clear as day.

The paladin hesitates just a second, not sure what to make of that reaction. She closes the door behind him, heading to the kitchen out of habit, then pauses. "Can... can I offer a refreshment or..." Strange- I've fought besides pavitra, rescued and been rescued pavitra, sought advice from them, healing... but I've never entertained one before.

Vigilant

"Ah, if you have some cr--" Do not. Ask Bright's Vallen. For a mug of cream. "That is to say, thank you, but I do not require sustenance. Ah, do not be alarmed. This is a social call, not a Calling."

"I... could make tea?" she offers slowly, hand still partially reaching for the cabinet. "And thank you, that is... good to hear." It would have been... awkward to have to juggle a Calling and my assignment.

Vigilant

"Tea is acceptable. I take mine with extra milk," he says, relieved. "Or cream, if that is what you prefer. Do not go to extra trouble on my behalf."

Sounding a little relieved at having an idea on how to proceed, Vallen nod crisply again and sets to work. "I have a jug of fresh cream, yes. I'm not sure how long I will be here so I haven't gotten much in the way of options. So just plain black tea and cream I'm afraid." Her tone is brisk, polite but more professional rather than friendly.

Vigilant

"Quite acceptable," he reassures her. "I take a one to one ratio of cream to tea," he adds, not wanting to admit to a two-to-one -- or, as Beth calls it, "tea-flavored cream". "This form is incapable of blowing to cool, you understand," he adds.
