The first thing they hear as Jassinth, Emi, and Manu approach Shiori's quarters is soft, desperate weeping. Shiori's in bed, face turned from the door, flat on her back (she can barely stand to move, even to sit up and take some broth), her hair a mess, her hands shaking.

Jassinth

Hissing in helpless rage and loving worry, Jassinth rushed ahead to grab Shiori's hand. [Sap flows, bark covers, time heals] he intoned in Elder Fae. A green mist and a whiff of rich loam flickered in and right back out, then Shiori felt the barest edge of the pain and weakness fade. Studying her, Jass sagged a little in disappointment. "I had hoped it would... I'm sorry, that was my best prayer."

Face pale, Emi was frozen in the doorway, mouth covered with one hand. She looks terrible! What did they do to her!? Why did they even punish-- not, torture her because her beloved pet was murdered by that brute?

Shiori

"Jassinth," she whispers, reaching up to cling to his hand tightly, tears clouding her vision. "I thought-- they said you had gone, I thought-- I thought I'd never see you again. I don't... I don't think I can walk, anymore. They broke my pelvis and it healed... it healed wrong, somehow."

Jassinth

Jass fought and lost at keeping his snarl inside. Healing magic doesn't heal wrong for no reason. There wasn't time for her to accept the break as true, so they must have restrained her to shape the healing.

Healing magic wasn't transformation nor did it have a force effect. If the proper, natural, shape was simply impossible due to environmental factors- such as being pinned under a fallen tree-- then it would heal as best it could. Small objects embedded in the wound might be pushed out if near the surface or shifted and encased in scar tissue otherwise, but that was the extent of it.

"It's not you," he said tightly. "It's not natural and it's not how you should be. Hold those thoughts tight, love. Engrave them in your soul. We can fix that, but it will be so much easier if you can force yourself to never accept the crippling as a part of you."

So focused on Shiori was Jass, that he completely missed Emi's shocked gasp at his term of endearment. If he had glanced behind himself, he would have been surprised by her expression; romance and adoration. Not adoration that is romantic however, but rather adoration of romance. "A servant-lady forbidden love," she mouthed silently, stars in her eyes.

Shiori

Shoiri wipes away her tears again and again, but they keep replenishing. "You have to run," she whispers. "They'll catch us and, and they'll break you too. I couldn't bear if -- it was so -- Dreamy's dead," she ends up saying instead. "And so is Dniss. And they, they mutilated me, so I can't, so I won't be able to have relations until the child is born."

Jassinth

"I'm not leaving you," Jass said simply, not bothering to lower his voice. "I am yours, Shiori, and I'm not going to abandon you. All you can decide is if I stay at your side or in your shadow."

Shiori

"You don't understand," she whispers, closing her eyes. "I got off easy. You don't understand what they'll do to you, without a baby in your belly. Death would be a kindness."

Jassinth

"Their priests should know well the price touching me would cost them," Jass said grimly. "Raplin might be a minor deity, but that just means I'm significantly more important to Him than they are to Her."

"And I can, umm, I can maybe help with that too?" Emi finally spoke up to offer.

Shiori

Shori's eyes snap open, and she struggles to focus them through the pain onto the doorway. "Emiko?" she blurts in surprise. "-sama," she adds, belatedly.

NPCs

"Emi, remember?" The lady said faux-crossly. She took a few steps closer, hesitant but determined. "You... Oh Shiori, what-- who-- this is too cruel!"
We are many. We are legion. We are... NPCs!

Shiori

"I told them it was only a servant I lay with, but they made me... there was a ritual, to their goddess, and I was forced to undergo it as punishment for straying."

NPCs

"Oh!" Emiko's cheeks filled with pink and her eyes darted to Jassinth. "Umm, that's-- that is-- what I mean to say that-- ahem!" She took a deep, dramatic, breath, then widened her stance as if bracing against a strong wind. "They went too far! Committing adul-- ah, straying, is roman-- naughty-- bad! yes, but you were tortured. Some extra prayers, some community service, maybe having some luxuries taken away; that would make sense. But..."
We are many. We are legion. We are... NPCs!

Jassinth

"Ah, yes, that does sound much more sensible," Jass managed to say with a somber tone. It seems little miss Emiko is a closet romantic, in the way of pulp romance and shameless ballads.

Shiori

Shiori shakes her head, wiping at her tears with shaking hands. "My sister is the sweetest person you'll ever meet, and she-- she tells me her husband beats her, when he is having a bad day. She says he treats her like an incubator and a stress toy. They don't... they don't value women in Towa clan."

Jassinth

Jassinth snorted rudely. "They don't value anyone in Towa clan, aside from each themselves."

"It's really that bad?" Emiko whispered, looking horrified. "I mean... I've heard rumors but they've always been so... unbelievable?"
