Stone's Throw

[Charon Tethras]

"Great. Good to see how much we get along," he says bitterly, "given you seem to be wishing an early death on me. Some twins we are."

[Andreas Amell]

Andreas gapes at Charon, mouth moving soundlessly for a moment. "Wh-what?" he sputters.

[Charon Tethras]

"What do you think comes of being Chosen by Fate? Surely not a long, peaceful life."

[Andreas Amell]

"Well, okay, one? I'm not trying to make it happen, I'm just trying to plan ahead. Like, better to know you're an adventurer or hero instead of it just blindsiding you. And two? Adventures and quests aren't always a death sentence you know."

[Charon Tethras]

"You ever talk to a retired hero? Because I have. And he was pretty clear -- you don't want to be Called up."

[Andreas Amell]

"Uh, yeah? Like..." He starts counting on his fingers quickly. "Like... almost a dozen of our family are or were adventurers. Most of those were outright heroes actually."

[Charon Tethras]

"And they want that for you?" he asks with disgust. 

[Andreas Amell]

"For me, specifically? No, I'd make a terrible adventurer," the pampered artist says with a shudder. "And again, I'm not hoping you're one, just noting you might be. Again, knowing allows preparation and 'proper preparation prevents piss poor performance' after all."

[Charon Tethras]

"What do you expect me to do differently if I am an adventurer?" he asks, now morbidly curious. 

[Andreas Amell]

"Uh, well, at least being aware of it, and knowing to look for portents and such could give you some warning? Umm. Getting training is kind of a mixed bag; safer that way if you are called, but also maybe possibly makes it more likely? The whole thing is pretty, uh, nebulous. Like, honestly, we know about how souls work than how that sort of Fate functions."

[Charon Tethras]

"Would it be out of character for you to ask this Aveline for fighting lessons?"

[Andreas Amell]

"Aveline? Oh yeah, very much so; she's so incredibly busy, plus it would be a waste of both our times as, uh, well, she's stupid good and..." He coughs lightly. "I am forbidden from ever picking up an axe again. Ever." Another cough. "But asking Uncle Carver for some lessons for self-defense-- with like a dagger, shortsword or maybe mace? That would be fine."

[Charon Tethras]

"The one that's. Um." What did he say? "Impulsive and stubborn?"

[Andreas Amell]

"Ah. Well, yes. But he'd also love to train me. You. He's kind of... He's great at training people and he loves doing it. Mabari even more, but anyway, he'd really enjoy you-as-me actually taking him up on the training offers he's made in the past." He hesitates, then adds, "and... he's our uncle, but he was basically my dad growing up. He and mom are twins and they've always been close to each other. You should get the chance to know him."

[Charon Tethras]

"...yeah. Okay. I think I will." He sighs, then, handing over the bag of clothes he'd picked out. "This is to wear to work. It's my nicer stuff, you'll be fine. I work next tomorrow at sixth bell. Dil can show you the way."
