The Black Dirge [Sci-fi]

"Zee, run her through the weights. I'm going to make sure we get the supplies unloaded correctly." Shinigami turns back, passing Kimiko with a scowl that clearly shows her displeasure at the new kid's cowardice. Gym equipment wasn't going to attack her. There was no sense cowering.

"..." She stares at Shinigami as the girl leaves, learn timidly looks to Zee, "Uhh...?" She looks like she VERY much doesn't want to go in. She also looks especially fragile, as though even if the wind blew she'd be knocked over.

Zee smiles softly as she places a hand on the small of Kimiko's back, gently urging the girl forward into the gym.

"Welcome. Welcome to my domain." She intones ominously. "Here, I eat the weak for breakfast, mold them to my whims, and spit them back out again stronger than they ever thought was possible."

As the door closes behind them Zee stops pushing on Kimiko's back and walks around to look at the girl from the front.

"You're even in luck. I think we have a workout jumpsuit in your size."

"Uhh... but... I..." She very much wants to protest, but Zee is quite insistent, and she should probably try to get along. She begrudgingly nods, frowning, "Okay..." she responds quietly, her voice sounding almost as though she's about to start crying. Oh well... Zee will just have to see firsthand...

"Excellent. the changing area is just this way."

Zee leads the way to an alcove with some lockers and a bench. There does not seem to be much in the way of privacy to be had here, except for a corner of the alcove that has had some curtains tacked up around it. Zee fishes around in one of the larger lockers for a moment before handing a brilliant pink jumpsuit to Kimiko.

"Not much choice about the color i'm afraid, but this one should fit. You can use the locker to the left of mine. I'll get a nametag for it by tomorrow. If you want to, you can use the thumbprint lock, but mostly we don't bother. I'll break the legs of anyone who steals anything here in the gym anyway."

Zee smiles and winks at that statement, pulling a jumpsuit out of her own locker, this one is a shockingly orange shade, and beginning to pull her top off over her head. Clearly Zee plans to change into her workout clothes right here.

Kimiko quickly turns away, blushing. Because she was exempt from PE, she didn't have much experience with changing with others, so this was more than a bit difficult for her to process. She hurries to grab the suit, fumbling with it a bit, and nearly trips as she makes her way to the curtained area but manages to just barely NOT trip. She hides in the alcove, catching her breath, then changes into the jumpsuit.

Zee frowns slightly, well that bit of modesty's going to make certain kinds of missions rather more difficult, still it's not exactly her place to force the recruit to deal with that right now. After Zee finishes changing into her jumpsuit she calls through the curtains.

"When you're ready we'll start on the free weights. We'll keep the actual weight fairly low for now, i want to make sure your form's right before we get into the heavier weights that can cause you some real damage if you don't have proper form. Think you can manage a two kilo* lift?"

* about 4.5 pounds, or a little over half a gallon of water worth of weight.

When Kimiko steps out, it becomes quite obvious that she isn't the least bit athletic. While the bodysuit looked like it would fit her, she's considerably thinner than expected, and it looks to be a bit loose, well everywhere. She barely looks like she can lift her own arms, let alone two kilos. She shakes her head, "That's a bit much..." She frowns, putting her head down, nervously folding her hands in front of her, looking embarrassed and already worn out just from changing.

"Hmm... we'll see about that. Anyway, i don't have any single kilo weights so we'll do the best we can for now."

Zee walks over to an area that's set up with a padded floor and gestures for Kimiko to sit on one of the benches.

"We'll start with a simple hold i think. Hold your arms like this and have your legs slightly apart. I'll place the weight in your hands and you hold it for as long as you can. when you can't hold it anymore just drop it to the floor. Don't worry about damaging anything, so long as you don't drop it on yourself you can't hurt anything here."

Zee demonstrates the hold by placing her hands about three inches out from her chest and about level with her shoulders.

Kimiko slowly nods and takes the stance, holding out her arms. The poor girl looks to be struggling just to keep her arms up after a few seconds, already straining before any weights are added.

Zee places the weight in Kimiko's hands, it's just a simple iron rod, with threaded ends, and a couple of stops separating the threaded ends from the knurled middle. it's clearly just the grip from an adjustable weight dumbbell. Zee keeps her fingers on the bar, slowly letting more and more of the weight be supported by Kimiko.

"Just focus on holding the weight for as long as you can. Don't listen to your body when it says it can't. It doesn't know what it can do, you know you can hold this,  don't let your body fool you into thinking you are weak. Do not worry about getting hurt. There may be some pain, but i will not let you injure yourself. Endure it, for as long as you can. Endure it and find out what exactly it is you can do."

Zee speaks calmly, yet intensely. the encouraging, yet forceful, tone is something very different to the aloof detachment she's been showing up until now.

Kimiko focuses too hard and stops breathing, the weight clearly too much for her. She uses all her might, but her arms begin to fall as more and more of the weight is added. She doesn't even last 5 seconds. She has her eyes closed, her face turning red, struggling with effort. She forgot to breathe... she gets dizzy quickly, and ends up fainting.

Zee manages to move fast enough to catch the weight, and prevent Kimiko from falling backwards off the bench. Placing the weight on the floor she maneuvers Kimiko so that she lies flat on the bench. As Kimiko's eyes start fluttering, regaining consciousness, Zee speaks softly and kindly

"Well, Gami sure did give me a hell of a project in you, didn't she? Still I've started with worse and still managed to turn them into proper soldiers, I'll manage the same with you, given enough time."

The physical and mental exhaustion from the past few days combines into one giant lump, and before she can respond, she passes out. Looks like she isn't going to wake up for now. At least her breathing is better now.

Well then. that was interesting. After briefly checking vitals Zee picks Kimiko up easily and makes her way to Kimiko's quarters. It's a long road ahead, so there's no sense in rushing.

After tucking the girl into her bed and retrieving the jumpsuit to store in Kimiko's locker Zee pauses on her way through the common room, looking briefly for Shimigami...
