Stone's Throw

[Diligence]

Dil blinks a few times. "...I meant like which one?" A beat. "Or wait, were you doing the thing where you say 'yes' to mean both?"

[Charon Tethras]

"She sounds both emotional and overbearing."

[Diligence]

"...oof," Dil says firmly, nodding.

[Charon Tethras]

"Yeah. So I don't really want the family. Just the money."

[Diligence]

Dil scratches at the ridge over his left eye. "...that sounds kinda, I dunno, mean?"

[Charon Tethras]

He sighs. "I guess? I don't know. I don't know how to have a family."

[Diligence]

"Maybe they're not as bad as they sounded?" Dil offers supportively. 

[Charon Tethras]

"Maybe," he says grimly. "If only I had some way to scry on them without getting involved or revealing myself."

[Diligence]

"We could see zombie mice to spy on... no, there's no way they wouldn't have wards up for undead." he mutters, nostrils flaring. "Hmm. Hrrm. Hmmmmm. I don't think we're sneaky enough either. And I doubt your, uh, brother would be willing to carry something in. Make reports? Hrrm."

[Charon Tethras]

Charon chews on his lower lip a moment. "Hey Dil," he says slowly. "Do you remember that one time when someone asked if you were, what's his face... Samuel? That kobold that never showed up for work? So they let you have his work spot and his supper?"

[Diligence]

Dil scowls darkly. "Yeah," he mutters bitterly. "Wasn't even a kobold, he was nagaji. They're twice my size, how could they get it that mixed up? Assholes."

[Charon Tethras]

"Yeah, right! Well I look just like Andreas, except for my clothes, so..."

[Diligence]

"...so you want to eat his dinner?" Dil asks, not keeping up thanks to his remembered annoyance. And his general... Dil-ness.

[Charon Tethras]

"Sure. I mean, I could go to his house and pretend to be him and find out what his family's really like."

[Diligence]

"Except he's already in town," Dil points out. "I mean, there's a reason why I didn't go back the next time. Aside form it being really hard work. And bright."
