The Family [Finished]

Vic nods. "I don't know what I should do anymore. My... previous part-time job kind of fell apart. And I didn't finish school or nothin."

[accalia]

"Hmph, that will be a bit of a problem for investigation, they do insist on at least a high school diploma. Did you not finish school because you couldn't keep up or did you just stop going?"

[yamikuronue]

"I uh..." He blushes a bit. "We needed the money, so I dropped out to work."

[accalia]

"Plenty do that. no shame there, you supported your family. Alright, if you want to go for investigation the first step's to go for your GED. Y'll need a sponsor for that, but there's plenty of us at the precinct that like ya enough to sign that piece of paper. The fee... well it's not too much, but it'll still be a couple of months pay for y' as an intern. Well, you just leave that problem to Unca' bear."

It's really impressive how bear can be shoveling fries into his mouth like that and still keep up clear conversation.

[yamikuronue]

Vic bows his head. "I don't think I could be an investigator," he says, slowly.

[accalia]

"and why not? y'r smart, observant, and shrewd. Y'know how the crims think so you know what to look for. Y'think none of our investigators have less than perfectly clear rap sheets? most of them got into some sort of trouble when they were young, before they went over t'tha blue."

[yamikuronue]

"I'm not that smart. And also-- wait, how did you know I have a rap?"

[accalia]

"Y'don't. Least not official." Bear assures Vic "Y'just got the look of one that's not always been on this side of the law. Long as you're clean now and didn't do one of the big seven y'll be fine on that score."

[yamikuronue]

"Uh.." he says, staring up at him. "Big seven?"

[accalia]

Bear sighs and starts counting on his fingers "Murder one, Murder two, Manslaughter, Rape, Torture, Treason,  and worst of all Abuse of an animal." No, Bear's not a good liar, those last two ones aren't the same ones as the actual big seven, but given the others in the list.... Vic probably doesn't want to know what they are.

[yamikuronue]

Vic thinks about it, then shakes his head. "I managed to avoid manslaughter," he says quietly. "And uh, unless you count not feeding my pet fish when I was three, we're good on the rest."

[accalia]

"Everyone has a fish they forgot to feed." Bear says with a smile "Got any other objections?"

[yamikuronue]

"I'm not smart enough to be an inspector. And, uh, it'll cause big problems for me when my secrets eventually come out."

[accalia]

"Bull shit you ain't smart enough. you're smarter than three quarters of the inspectors I've seen in my entire career." Bear says somewhat sharply before switching to a softer tone "Your secret, drugs? drinking? maybe something illegal? Yes, no, or piss off will do, i'm not trying to out you if you don't want to be."

[yamikuronue]

Vic shakes his head. "No, no, and one of my secrets is a yes. But the big one... they'd never forgive me. I lie to everyone, all the time."
