Well, the thing is, O is kinda a shit magician. He has his 'spells' as tattoos so he has less of a chance to fuck them up and he can detect some things. He's honestly more of a mage fighter than an actual wizard

wizards go flashy ad rarely bother much with defense beyond a ward or two.

If i was to categorize Echo of Old before he was crippled in the way he currently is he would be more of a Kung-fu Mage Monk. He had a lot of discipline, and a hell of a lot of power, but not a very deep understanding on how magic works. That was never much of a problem because he had enough power to make sure it worked anyway, or at least enough to shield himself from the backlash if it failed. if he had a deeper understanding of magic he possibly wouldn't have tried what he tried to do when he was..... bound....

Then again maybe he wouldn't have cared and tried anyway. A massive helping of Guilt and Grief is not a recipe for rational thought ans spellcasting.
