Go Down

Solras, The Protector

Solras, Daughter of Umdor, and Elder Private of the Watch seems to have not changed her dress at all, wearing a chainmail shirt over a leather and cotton undershirt, though she has changed the color from the traditional watch blue to a rather striking forest green. She's also switched from the traditional watch baton to a rather utilitarian looking axe that would be equally at home chopping wood or splitting skulls, though this being Nyra the weapon is visibly marked as peacebonded so it's for show not for using.

"Looks like there's  a cart trying to come the wring way up merchants way, we'd better turn here and take the back roads for a bit to avoid it." she comments, noticing a traffic snarl ahead. She's off duty and anyway it's just a traffic problem so more paperwork than anything. No need for her to help out when the on duty watch can have the fun of that paperwork instead.

Wylde

Wylde nods. "Right, makes sense," she says, leading the way through the detour. Of course, that means they have to head through one of the less appetizing exits to the bazaar -- a street on a slop, leading up toward the mountain Nyra is built halfway into. This particular avenue has a rock wall along one side, part of efforts to terrace the hillside to produce flatter ground for building onto; the buildings are all well and good, for all that they tower above the street level here, but that wall is a favorite for certain types of men to sit and eat, watching people come and go from the market.

Like this oddly familiar-looking black-and-white catfolk, lounging as he eats some kind of meat on a stick. Someone's caught his eye -- though thankfully not them, but instead, a catfolk a little ways ahead of them in the sparse crowd. "Hey, hey, pretty cat-cat!" he calls, green eyes fixed on the woman.

Solras, The Protector

A low growl escapes Solras, Daughter of Umdor, and Elder Private of the Watch at the sound of that voice. It seems for a moment she is intent on resuming the chase that ended up with her flat on her back looking up at a jeering cat. She gets herself under control almost immediately though. She is off duty and has no evidence of wrong doing. Any evidence that did exist in the initial chase, if it existed in the first place, is bound to be long gone to the point that the case would be her word against his, and the Captain won't accept that as a reason to arrest.

Wylde is bound to notice the reaction, knowing the dwarf as well as she does, but no one else on the street really is likely thanks to how short Solras, Daughter of Umdor, and Elder Private of the Watch is, and how quickly she controls her reaction.

Wylde

Wylde wrinkles her nose, not looking pleased either. "Why are men like that?" she mutters, disgusted.

Solras, The Protector

A grumpy shrug from the dwarf "Probably because it's considered too dangerous to belt them over the head when they do that. You don't have that problem in the Mines. Everyone wears good sturdy helmets all the time so a good thump to the head just stings a bit and makes your ears ring from the noise. Good disincentive to annoy someone to the point they take a swing at you."

As they watch, a second catfolk comes up to the wall behind Miki, stalking gracefully; the tabby listens for a moment to the tuxedo-cat's prattle, then swats the back of his head, claws sheathed. "Miki!"

The tuxedo cat winces, ears drooping; he replies in the hissing, feline language they use, and the two argue for a few moments longer as the female hurries along her way.

Solras, Daughter of Umdor, and Elder Private of the Watch seems satisfied at this state of affairs, The cat got what was coming to him.... Hmm.... Miki was it?

"This turning here should bring us where we want to go" she says after another minute or so of walking, the turning will have them pass pretty close to where Miki called out to the other cat, but they'll be passing below him so maybe he won't notice?

Wylde

Wylde grumbles a little, deep under her breath, as they pass below the cats on the wall. Unfortunately for her, they pass just as Miki is turning, which results in him saying something in a startled tone in that cat language.

The other cat smacks him again, eyes widening, and quickly tugs him away, down the length of the wall to hop off it at the end.

"Huh," says Wylde, blinking. "Well at least one of them has some sense."

Solras, The Protector

"If I were to guess, I think his comment was scatological." Solras, Daughter of Umdor, and Elder Private of the Watch comments smiling. Definitely startled. This pleases her for some reason. "This way, should be just a block and a half to the left after this alley."

Wylde

"Damn cats," agrees Wylde, trotting alongside Solras. "I don't know why we let them stay in Nyra, they do nothing but cause trouble."

Solras, The Protector

"We are of the Guard. We protect those who cannot protect themselves. We serve those who need our help. No matter how much trouble they cause, they are of this place and need the same protections as any other."

Hmm, seems Solras, Daughter of Umdor, and Elder Private of the Watch feels rather differently about the cats thatn Wylde. She's not happy that they cause so much trouble, true, but the idea of kicking the cats out seems anathema to her. Which makes sense considering what happened a month ago when a drunk human decided to pick on a Kender for being too short while Solras, Daughter of Umdor, and Elder Private of the Watch was on duty and patrolling nearby. Even though she was docked three days pay for that incident, Solras, Daughter of Umdor, and Elder Private of the Watch seemed satisfied with the result.

Wylde

"Sure, but if we ejected the troublemakers the rest of the citizens would be safer, wouldn't they? Why should we protect people who prey on our people?"

Solras, The Protector

"Because we are the protectors of the people of this place. they are of this place, that makes them as much our people as the aristocrats that look down their noses at us and consider us less than People because we were not born wealthy. We protect all, we serve all." is the somewhat testy reply, a rather remarkable feat considering how little inflection Solras, Daughter of Umdor, and Elder Private of the Watch actually uses while speaking Common.

Wylde

"I mean, I'll do it," she argues. "But when you have a sick sheep, you don't keep them in with the flock, it makes the whole flock weaker to catch the illness. When wolves find one of the pack that refuses to cooperate, they drive him off, so that the pack remains strong and unified. I don't understand why mortals persist in keeping the poisonous elements close where they can do more damage. Shouldn't the city as a whole, the strength of thousands, trump the rights of one person?"

Solras, The Protector

"The needs of the many do indeed outweigh the needs of the few, or the one. But our job is to ensure that the needs of the one, or the few, do not deny the many their needs."

Solras, Daughter of Umdor, and Elder Private of the Watch isn't chastising Wylde, but it does seem she has a different perspective on the cats. One that probably means she's much more sympathetic to them than many.
